Reformers, Today, the United States Senate is set to vote on Senator Sheldon Whitehouse’s (D-RI) DISCLOSE Act, a bill that would force organizations (corporations, Super PACs, PACs, labor unions, nonprofits) that spend money on campaign expenditures to disclose their donors, and do so within 24 hours of the expenditure if it is more than $10,000. Traditionally speaking, conservatives have long been proponents of full-disclosure, while liberals were proponents of limits. As Governor Roemer stated throughout his recent presidential campaign, “We now live in a nation with neither.” Conservatives and liberals ought to agree that there is nothing democratic about using secret money to influence an election. This clearly provides great potential for corruption.
