SDS 7th Annual National Convention Announced! Oct. 26-28th | Gainesville, Florida

SDS 7th Annual National Convention Announced!
Oct. 26-28th | Gainesville, Florida

Students & Youth: Protest the Republican & Democratic National Conventions!
Youth and students from all over the world and country are fighting back against the incredible injustices reaped upon the world’s people by US politicians and their corporate backers.  From the capital rotunda of Wisconsin to Zucotti park, to the Tampa Bay Times Forum in Florida to Wall Street South, to Egypt’s Tahrir Square and the Greek uprisings, youth have demonstrated that our energy and passion will lead the way in the struggle against a system historically rooted in oppression.  With the 2012 Presidential election coming up, it is time to hold the feet of Republican and Democratic politicians to the fire.  We will not be fooled by divide and conquer tactics - neither of these parties will genuinely fight for the needs of our generation, of working people, or of oppressed people throughout the world. Now is the time for youth to stand together!

Why we’re marching...
Access to education is a HUMAN RIGHT, but we are seeing access dwindle. Many students today cannot afford post-secondary education and are generally faced with two options: don’t go to college, or attend and face tens of thousands of dollars in student debt. Student loans are one of the biggest threats to the future success of our generation;  most people spend decades, if not their lifetime paying for what is a natural human right. Within the context of a totally destabilized job market, there are few quality jobs for recent graduates, and many students are stuck with doing the same work they did before they got their degree - usually a job that does not pay enough to afford the bills.
Millions of people have lost their homes and jobs as a result of the crisis created by the irresponsible practices of “too-big-to-fail” banks.  Reproductive rights for women and LGBTQ people are under attack while the government continues to spend more money on wars and occupations abroad.  Finally, Republicans & Democrats alike have spearheaded racist attacks on immigrants, detaining and deporting them, and continue to criminalize honest, hard-working people.
People all across the U.S. and the world are realizing that the problems in our society are bigger than a few bad leaders, laws, or particular corporations. What our society needs is NOT corporate bailouts, tax breaks for the rich, endless, brutal wars and criminalization of those who are on the right side of history. What the PEOPLE need is money for human needs such as education, housing, healthcare. It is the government’s responsibility to provide greater access to these, rather than pillage them.

Demands:
Every person who is denied access to healthcare, is denied their reproductive rights, is deported, goes broke, jobless, and homeless or is thrown in prison while Wall Street firms reel in record profits demonstrates that the Republican & Democratic Party has continually placed profits before people.  JOIN US! to demand Good Jobs, Healthcare, Affordable Education, Equality and Peace!

Dare to struggle, dare to win!

Green Party Presidential Candidate: Two-Party System "Like an Abusive Relationship"

“The voices of ordinary people are locked out of the two-party system,” she said in a recent interview with Snellville Patch, “which is by and for the lobbyists and wealthy campaign contributors.”
Her running mate, Cheri Honkala, is visiting a tent city outside of the Republican National Convention called Romneyville, a tribute to Hooverville, a popular name for tent cities set up by unemployed and homeless families during the Great Depression. During the Democratic National Convention, they will set up Obamaville.
"It's suicidal to have this kind of political system," said Stein, discussing what sets the Green party apart from Democrats and Republicans. "We don’t accept corporate money because we are people powered, not money powered. We have the liberty to stand up and fight for the solutions the American people are clamoring for."

Federal Election Commission Certifies Federal Matching Funds
for Jill Stein for President

WASHINGTON – The Federal Election Commission has declared Jill Stein for President eligible to receive federal matching funds and certified a payment of $100,000 for the 2012 primary election.
Jill Stein for President is the authorized committee of Jill Stein, the presidential candidate of the Green Party. Stein is the third candidate to be declared eligible for federal matching funds in 2012. The Commission has certified $351,961.10 in federal matching funds to Charles E. “Buddy” Roemer III and $230,058.91 to Gary Earl Johnson for the primary.

Roemer, who in February became the first 2012 presidential candidate to be declared eligible to receive federal matching funds, ended his presidential campaign on May 31. Johnson, the Libertarian Party candidate, became eligible for matching funds in May.

To become eligible, candidates must raise a threshold amount of $100,000 by collecting $5,000 in 20 different states in amounts no greater than $250 from any individual.Other requirements to be declared eligible include agreeing to an overall spending limit, abiding by spending limits in each state, using public funds only for legitimate campaign-related expenses, keeping financial records and permitting an extensive campaign audit.
Based on documents filed by Jill Stein for President on July 16, 2012, contributions from the following states were verified for threshold purposes: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

All of the materials included with this submission may be viewed here. Based on Jill Stein for President’s initial threshold submission, the Commission will request that the United States Treasury make an initial payment of $100,000 to the committee.

Once declared eligible, campaigns may submit additional contributions for matching funds on the first business day of every monthThe maximum amount a primary candidate could receive is currently estimated to be about $22.8 million.

The presidential public funding program is financed through the $3 check-off that appears on individual income tax returns. The program has three elements: grants to parties to help fund their nominating conventions, grants available to nominees to pay for the general election campaign, and matching payments to participating candidates during the primary campaign.

This cycle, the maximum amount a primary candidate could receive is currently estimated to be about $22.8 million.

The Federal Election Commission (FEC) is an independent regulatory agency that administers and enforces federal campaign finance laws. The FEC has jurisdiction over the financing of campaigns for the U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate, the Presidency and the Vice Presidency. Established in 1975, the FEC is composed of six Commissioners who are nominated by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

We Need Real Debates (FireDogLake.com)

Firedoglake Activist,

Americans know the country is not headed in the right direction.

We are in desperate need of an honest debate of critical issues and how best to solve them. Yet the bipartisan devotion to wealthy interests has left little-to-no room for challenging the Washington orthodoxy from various sides of the political spectrum.

Third-party candidates are willing to probe the issues that Obama and Romney refuse to touch. Their inclusion in the Presidential debates would reflect the rich diversity of American political discourse necessary for a healthy democracy.

But we need your help to make their views known, starting with getting their voices and ideas included in the Presidential debates. Can you please donate $20+ to run Facebook ads targeted to supporters of third-party candidates and help them get into the 2012 Presidential debates?

With your help, we'll introduce a broader, more honest debate into our increasingly undemocratic political process.

The 2012 campaign is poised to be the most expensive in US history, and there's just no way these candidates with limited resources can be heard without access to the debates. Without endless Super PAC support and immense media platforms like the Democratic and Republican Conventions, the debates are essentially their only shot at being heard.

A truly open forum would afford these third-party candidates the rare opportunity to challenge the major party candidates' silence on the critical issues facing the American people.

If we want our concerns heard over the tidal wave of money and plutocratic interests flooding this election, we need to force the Commission on Presidential Debates and the Citizens' Debate Commission to provide space for third-party candidates.

At Firedoglake, writers like Kevin Gosztola are going to great lengths to report on the countervailing viewpoints of third-party candidates. With your support, we'll continue our campaign for a 2012 election more inclusive of the views and concerns of all Americans.

Thanks for all you do,

Jane Hamsher

Are You Ready For Labor Day? (From JillStein.Org)

Since yesterday, when we launched our "Crashing the Conventions" drive, we've raised almost $10,000. That's pretty good, but we need to raise another $70,000 by Labor Day if we're going to break into the media this week. Read all about it by clicking here.
union-yes-jill-stein-cheri-honkala.pngLabor Day of course, is this Monday, September 3rd. On Labor Day, we recognize the past sacrifices of working people in their struggles for emancipation, and rededicate ourselves to the movement for workers power in the year ahead. Please join Jill Stein, Cheri Honkala, and the rest of the campaign team in marking this holiday by taking part in your local Labor Day events.
We know that many of you already have Labor Day plans for tabling, marching, and flyering. Check out our revised our flyer (CLICK HERE), and also have a special Labor Day editorial (CLICK HERE) by Jill Stein which you can print out and distribute.
Please be sure to contact HQ@JillStein.org to let us know how much you spent on copies.
If you have not already made plans, and don't know where to start, here are three easy steps:
  1. What to do: Round up a few other volunteers (friends, family, coworkers, you name it) ready to help get the word out on Labor Day.
  2. Where to go: Find your local Labor Day events here: http://local.americawantstowork.org/all
  3. What to bring: Plenty of copies of our halfsheet flyers (CLICK HERE TO PRINT OUT) and of our special Labor Day editorial (CLICK HERE), as well as other campaign materials you have on hand. Please be sure to contact HQ@JillStein.org to let us know how much you spent on copies.
Let's get the word out that while the bosses may own two political parties, working people finally have at least one: The Greens.
